Euphorbia tirucalli, commonly known as the Pencil Cactus, Sticks on Fire, or Firesticks Plant, is a striking succulent shrub admired for its vivid colouration and sculptural, coral-like form. A member of the Euphorbiaceae family and native to the dry regions of Africa and India, this distinctive species is beloved by collectors and designers for its architectural silhouette and vibrant hues that shift beautifully with the seasons.

The plant’s thin, cylindrical stems resemble clusters of glowing coral, ranging in colour from fresh green in lower light to fiery shades of orange, red, and gold in bright sun. These slender, leafless branches form an upright, branching structure that looks almost like living sculpture — making Euphorbia tirucalli a dramatic addition to both modern interiors and outdoor xeriscapes.

Low-maintenance, resilient, and visually bold, the Pencil Cactus is the perfect statement plant for lovers of colour, texture, and architectural form.

Euphorbia tirucalli – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, direct sunlight. For the strongest colour, give it at least 4–6 hours of full sun daily. In lower light, the stems remain green; under strong light, they develop orange and red tones. If grown indoors, place it near a south-facing window or under a grow light.

Watering

Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let any excess drain away. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems — this plant stores moisture in its stems and tolerates extended dry periods. In winter, reduce watering to once every 4–6 weeks.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–30 °C; avoid exposure to temperatures below 12 °C. It is highly sensitive to frost.
Humidity: Low to average humidity is ideal. The Pencil Cactus thrives in dry air and does not require misting.

Soil and Potting

Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix — a blend of compost, coarse sand, and perlite or pumice works perfectly. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, refreshing the soil and giving roots a little more room. Choose a heavy pot to prevent tipping, as tall plants can become top-heavy.

Feeding

Feed lightly every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid feeding in autumn and winter when the plant is dormant.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune only to control size or shape, removing unwanted branches with sterilised tools. Always wear gloves and protective clothing when pruning — Euphorbia tirucalli produces a milky latex sap that is toxic and can cause severe skin or eye irritation. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.

Growth and Maturity

A fast-growing succulent under the right conditions, Euphorbia tirucalli can reach up to 1.5–2 metres indoors and even larger outdoors in warm climates. Its branching structure becomes more intricate with age, creating a coral- or candelabra-like silhouette that’s both dynamic and sculptural.

Common Issues

  • Soft, collapsing stems: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Lack of colour: Insufficient light.

  • Shrivelled stems: Extended drought or extreme cold.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by mealybugs or spider mites — treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Native to semi-arid regions of Africa and India, Euphorbia tirucalli grows naturally in sandy soils and full sun, where it has adapted to drought and heat. Its vibrant colours serve as natural sun protection, deepening in tone with exposure to strong light.

In addition to its ornamental appeal, it’s a symbol of strength and endurance — thriving in even the harshest conditions. In modern interiors, its sculptural form and seasonal colour shifts make it a popular plant for minimalist, desert-inspired, or architectural designs.

Reduce sound vibrations in your car! Works great! This is not sound proofing, it is Sound Deadening
Size: 10 sqft, Size: 10 sqft
This Butyl rubber sound proofing kit includes nine 15 1/2" x 10" peel and stick panels. It really is a lot of coverage, but I still will need a second box to finish my car doors. The instructions are easy to follow and the only tools you need are scissors or a knife and a small roller, but you could get away with using a pan scraper to press the product down. You may need paper and a pen to make a template for certain areas, though. I used some cardboard from my recycle bin to cut template pieces for the hard to see areas inside my doors. This is fairly easy to install once you have it cut into pieces, just peel the backing off and stick it on. Be very careful to not let it stick to itself, as it will be nearly impossible to separate. This stuff is crazy sticky! No worries about it coming off once you've stuck it to your car. To add this to your car doors, you will have to remove the interior door panels, but there are lots of YouTube videos on how to do this on all sorts of cars. Note that is is sound deadening material - Not sound proofing! You do not need to cover 100% of the car with this. The material is designed to stop noise from resonating through metals, so even one piece of this on a large area of sheet metal will stop the sound vibrations quite a bit. I am covering about 80% of my car doors with it, then planning to put sound proofing on top of it. This sound deadening material needs to come in contact with the metal surfaces to stop the sound vibrations, so it would not be very helpful to put it on top of sound proofing material. Also note that the installation requires temperatures above 50° Fahrenheit. Since it is winter, I've warmed up my garage while working on this project. In low temps, the sticky stuff would probably have trouble adhering to cold metals. So far I have tested just having it on my front doors, but I already can hear the difference. This soundproofing definitely does minimize road noise and external sounds from getting inside your car. It also stops music vibrations, so my radio now sounds clearer than it did before. I don't plan to pull out my vehicle carpet to install on the floor, but I would imagine that if I did it would greatly reduce the road noise even more. Definitely five stars on this product!

Quality mats that provide noticeable noise suppression
Size: 10 sqft
I used these mats when I replaced the carpet in my Chevy Tahoe. Cutting the mats to size was easy enough with a utility knife and a straightedge. The adhesive backing stuck fairly well, but I used a roller to press the mats into place on the metal panels, which seemed to help them adhere a little better. Under the old carpet was the type of insulation you'd typically see under carpet in a typical home. It was worn, so I tossed it and installed the new carpet directly over these new mats. The before & after difference in noise was minimal, but noticable. But I only installed them on the floor - not in the doors, rear hatch area, firewall, or roof. So overalll, I'm pleased with these mats as they provided the noise suppression that I had expected.
